Diagnosing disease through imaging is saving lives. Today, diseases like cancer can be more effectively treated if detected early. This is especially true for women facing breast cancer. An estimated 9,500 women in Ontario will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year, and 1,950 will die from the disease. But thanks to early detection and better treatment, the survival rate for breast cancer is among the highest for all cancers in Ontario.
This is why we are creating a new Centre of Excellence in Breast Cancer Screening and Treatment. The new centre will offer a one-stop experience for women when they come to St. Joseph’s anxiously wondering if they have breast cancer and not knowing the next step. Most importantly, it will eliminate the difficult waiting of up to six weeks for a full treatment plan if a woman is diagnosed with cancer. The vision is to make sure women come to one place for tests and a follow-up care plan on the same day.
To realize this ambitious vision, we are actively reaching out to our community for support to complete the funding needed to build a new centre in a central location that is more than double the size of its current footprint.
Our emergency department is our front door. Our highly specialized healthcare team provides critical care to babies, children, adults and seniors around the clock. We also look after our community’s vulnerable inner city populations: the homeless, people with mental illness and those with addictions.
St. Joseph’s Emergency was built more than 20 years ago to provide care for 65,000 patients annually. Last year, our Emergency Department had more than 100,000 visits, making it critically important that we redesign this essential service for our community.
The new Emergency has adopted new innovations like Super Track, a person-focused method of delivering emergency care, as well as plans to transform current spaced like our Kids’ Emergency and Mental Health Emergency Services Unit.
Help St. Joe’s realize this vision by supporting emergency care in your west-end community.
We hope to see you there!
