Dr. Sandy Tecimer believes that the key to providing excellent care to her patients is community. For her west-end based practice, Prince Edward Medical, this means having strong ties to St. Joseph’s Health Centre, both personally and professionally.
“My first significant experience with St. Joe’s happened when I was pregnant with my third child. I was admitted with pre-eclampsia and became an in-patient for the next few weeks. With two small children at home, it was difficult to be away from them, but living so close meant they were able to visit often Thanks to the amazing care I received, I was able to return home after four weeks.”
A year later, Dr. Tecimer started working at St. Joe’s, practicing low-risk obstetrics. In 2016, she opened her Kingsway-based clinic with a vision to provide patient care focused on the importance of community.
“All the physicians in our clinic share a similar philosophy. We believe that understanding a patient’s story will lead to better care. This is why we all have a close relationship with specialists at St. Joe’s. Collaboration with St. Joe’s specialists allows us to easily check-in on the progress of mutual patients, and have a dialogue to discuss treatment plans. This ensures we are providing the best care possible to our neighbours, and gives us piece of mind” says Dr. Tecimer. “This communication is vital, as specialists help us with managing specific diseases, and we help them put into context how the illness and management strategies impact a particular patient.”
“St. Joe’s is such an integral part of our west-end healthcare family” says Dr. Tecimer, “that’s why we choose to support the health centre with fundraisers and community outreach.”
From dressing up in support of St. Joe’s Toronto West Halloween Fest to organizing events such as community meet and greets, holding educational sessions at local churches and organizing talks at libraries, Prince Edward Medical continues to put community first in their awareness and fundraising efforts to support St. Joe’s.
“When there’s a serious emergency, you go to the closest hospital, and for Toronto’s west-end, that’s St. Joseph’s” says Dr. Tecimer. “We see our patients as family, and take comfort knowing that they are in good hands at St. Joe’s if care is needed quickly. We continue to support St. Joe’s through fundraising and outreach programs so that together, we can work towards making Toronto’s west-end one of the healthiest communities in Canada.”
