On January 30, 125 guests at the West-end Cares event had to make a tough decision. Which vital need at St. Joseph’s Health Centre would get their vote?
This fun Dragon’s Den style event pitted Dr. Andrea Miller representing the Geoffrey H. Wood Foundation Centre of Excellence in Breast Cancer Screening & Treatment against Dr. Steven Rhee representing St. Joe’s Emergency Department. Each tried to convince the assembled guests to vote for their cause.
Both causes came out winners! The event raised $25,000 in total for St. Joseph’s with $14,000 (56% of the votes) going towards the Breast Centre and $11,000 going towards the Emergency Department.
The new Breast Centre and a revitalized Emergency Department are just two of the many vital priorities that St. Joseph’s Health Centre Foundation is raising money for as part of the Promise Campaign.
“The new Geoffrey H. Wood Foundation Centre of Excellence for Breast Cancer Screening & Treatment will bring all of our services together into one dedicated space,” Dr. Miller told the guests. “Women will receive their imaging test results, see a specialist and leave with a treatment plan if they need one—all in the same, comfortable place.” Dr. Miller added, “I’d like to thank the West-end Cares organizers and everyone who came out to help support the new Breast Centre. It was a fun evening.”
Dr. Rhee’s presentation spoke to the fact that St. Joe’s has the busiest Emergency Department in downtown Toronto. Last year the Emergency team had more than 100,000 visits in a space that was built for just 60,000. “We urgently need to expand and revitalize our ED, so I was very happy to participate in this event to raise awareness of our inadequate physical infrastructure that’s causing a real emergency in our emergency department,” said Dr. Rhee.
A big thank you to the 125 west-enders who came out to the fundraiser. Special thanks to West-end Cares organizers Laurissa Canavan and Linda Visser and the Crooked Cue for hosting the event. The evening could not have happened without the excellent presentations from Dr. Steven Rhee and Dr. Andrea Miller.
