Garrons’ Gift Supports Community Health Care

On July 11, St. Joseph’s Health Centre Foundation announced a $10 million gift from Myron and Berna Garron

“Myron and Berna, you have made so much possible. You are helping St. Joe’s keep an important promise to our community – we told them we would always be here to meet their unique health care needs. Today marks a promise kept because of you,” said Mary MacLeod, Chief Nursing Executive and Site Lead, St. Joseph’s Health Centre, at the July 11 event celebrating the Garron gift.

Two new MRIs for St. Joe’s

The Garron’s donation will purchase two MRIs for St. Joe’s to create a Centre of Excellence in MRI. This will double the number of MRIs we can do each year – for patients, that means less waiting to get the answers they need. Maria Dyck, President and CEO of St. Joseph’s Health Centre Foundation says, “More and more people, both young and old, are choosing to put down their roots here. This transformative gift from the Garrons will help our neighbours get the very best care – and close to home. When you think about all the care that’s been provided since the Sisters of St. Joseph’s founded St. Joe’s almost 100 years ago, the number who’ve turned to us is staggering. A conservative estimate would run into the millions of people whose lives have been changed by St. Joe’s.

St. Joe’s is your community hospital

It’s likely every one has a memory of being in a hospital.  Many remember the birth of a child, and others will never forget sitting by the bed of someone who is sick or rushing to emergency when we get the call that someone we love has come in for care. You may not know it, but 80% of us will get almost all the care we’ll ever need locally, so community hospitals like St. Joe’s hold an important place of trust.

“Hundreds of thousands turn to us every year,” says Mary MacLeod, Chief Nursing Executive and Site Lead, St. Joseph’s Health Centre. “We’re here for our 500,000 neighbours – from the very beginning, to the end, and everything in between. The recent gift of $10 million from Myron and Berna Garron is transformative because it will help us keep our promise to meet the needs of our community.”

Thank you to all our donors

Thanks to our west-end neighbours, St. Joe’s Promise Campaign has raised more than $90 million. If you come to the Health Centre, you can see the dollars at work. For example, construction is now underway on a new, comprehensive breast centre that will also double screening capacity;  an expanded dialysis centre; a state-of-the art Palliative Care Centre; and redesigned mental health emergency services unit with greater privacy for adults, youth and children.
