A Welcome Delivery
Adam Langley pulled up to the St. Joe’s Emergency Department on a dreary December day. Against the grey backdrop, he opened the trunk of his car to reveal a happy pop of colour. As he started to lift out bright blue bags emblazoned with “Atoma” across the front, Donna Didimos, patient care manager in the Emergency Department, came out to greet him with a big smile.
Adam is the owner of Welcome Guardian Pharmacy on Roncesvalles. In December, he partnered with his suppliers and members of the community to give back to St. Joe’s. In a true community effort, Adam and his team put together 50 care packages for patients in the Emergency Department.
The care packages were full of daily essentials like combs, toothbrushes and toothpaste, soap, deodorant, and shampoo as well as seasonal items like mittens and a hat. And while Adam was instrumental at gathering all the required supplies, he credits some hardworking “elves” who helped him with the project.
“We worked with the youth group at a local church, St. Casimir’s Parish, to fill the bags. Father Pawel coordinated the youths who volunteered” says Adam. “The space was provided by the Knights of Columbus, so everyone pitched in to lend a hand.”
A Perfect Partnership
Adam decided to give back to St. Joe’s because he sees how the Health Centre and the pharmacy play a collaborative role in keeping neighbours healthy. “We selected St. Joe’s because we want to support our community. We believe that as a pharmacy we play an integral part in the overall health of our neighbours and St. Joe’s is at the centre of that,” he says.
Guardian’s gift made a huge difference for many of St. Joe’s patients. “Our patients are very appreciative,” says Donna Didimos. “Some of our patients come to Emergency with very little, so being able to send them off with some of these essentials is tremendous. It’s great to see members of our community helping out St. Joe’s.”
“I understand that any donation big or small can make a big difference and I am hoping to start something that will carry on for many years to come,” says Adam. That’s why he continues to support St. Joe’s and will be collecting donations at the cash register in his pharmacy for the entire month of May.
As a local business owner, Adam already contributes to the vibrant west-end community. And now, he’s helping St. Joe’s keep the promise to provide the best healthcare possible for Toronto’s west end.
