Together, we build extraordinary at St. Joe's
More than a century ago, the Sisters of St. Joseph founded St. Joseph’s Health Centre in response to the growing need for health care in the west end of Toronto—because they believed in the importance of looking after their neighbours.
Today, their legacy continues, thanks to donors like you. Because you believe in St. Joe’s ability to innovate and improve healthcare, this community is building something extraordinary in every corner of the hospital.
Your support makes a difference for a growing community who call the west-end home, and rely on St. Joe’s for care. It creates a foundation of innovation, and drives the momentum that will transform the future of healthcare—in our legacy buildings and in a new patient care tower.

The impact of our donors continues on the main floor of St. Joe’s, where donors are building something extraordinary for thousands of people. It takes a lot of support to expand the Ambulatory Care Centre, but it’s happening thanks to our generous donor community, who believe in transforming this space to build capacity for the 29 specialty clinics that see more than 340,000 appointments each year.
Expanding the ACC by 30% gives patients access to more comfortable, accessible spaces that meet the growing demand for care in the west end.

Transforming spaces. Advancing care. Changing lives.
It starts with you.
“If we did not have the support from donors like we do, we would not be able to push the boundaries of what’s possible,” says Dr. David Parente, a thoracic surgeon at St. Joe’s. “We would not be able to keep our hospital at the forefront of technology.”
Dr. Parente has seen how the generosity of people like you can change outcomes for patients—from image-based diagnostic tools in Diagnostic Imaging, to equipment that enables innovative techniques in the operating room.
One example that he recalls is when donors brought new cryoblation technology, a technique that uses cold energy to temporarily freeze chest nerves so patients experience less pain after surgery, to St. Joe’s. “Before we had this option, some patients returned to my clinic weeks later, still struggling to move,” he says. “Now, many are walking out of the hospital just days after surgery.”
Welcome Altaf Stationwala
On July 1, 2025, Altaf Stationwala joined us as the new President & CEO of Unity Health Toronto.
A highly respected leader in Ontario’s healthcare system, Altaf brings a wealth of expertise in health system operations, integration, and digital transformation.
As CEO, he will work closely with our Foundation, Board, and donors as we embark on our campaign to build a new St. Joe’s—the biggest improvement in health care our community has ever seen.
You are part of something extraordinary at St. Joe’s.
Together, we are embarking on the biggest healthcare transformation our west end has ever seen—building a new patient tower that will expand capacity to provide high-quality mental healthcare, emergency medicine, surgical solutions, and much more.
For far too long, our healthcare teams have been providing high-quality care in spaces that are too small to comfortably accommodate today’s leading technology. They have had to find ways to implement new care models that ensure greater efficiency within these tight spaces.
This commitment to innovation has made St. Joe’s what it is today—a pioneer in reducing emergency wait times, a leader in surgical care, and a sought-after hospital for children and people with mental illness.
Now, you are moving us forward to deliver the best care experiences, in improved spaces that reflect the care and innovation happening here. Our new, state-of-the-art patient tower will add 900,000 ft2 of additional space that includes 340 beds in new, single patient rooms with private washrooms, 2 floors dedicated to mental health, 13 new operating rooms that are 50% larger, and much more. Because of you, extraordinary healthcare is here and there’s much more still to come.
It’s amazing to see what’s possible when our community comes together—like the incredible $60 million investment from Peter Gilgan that is kickstarting the campaign to build the new tower. Your gifts continue to play a vital role in helping us build extraordinary in our legacy buildings and in the future patient care tower.
