Julia Knox and her son Max say whatever the weather, it’s always a beautiful day to come out and do something special.
This past year, they rode 50 kilometres in the Cycle 4 St. Joe’s event. For Max, it was the biggest ride he’s ever done. “It was a big achievement!”
For Julia, it was worth the effort as a proud west ender whose family has had to use St. Joe’s more than once. “It’s so incredible to see so many people—old and young—come out and support our fantastic community hospital.”
While she and Max reached their personal goals, she says no one should think that Cycle 4 St. Joe’s is intimidating or competitive. “You don’t have to be an experienced cycler. There are 10 kilometre rides on a beautiful course, so just go out there and have fun.”
It’s especially motivating when you have something pushing you. For Julia, it’s remembering how St. Joe’s was there for her childhood best friend, who was diagnosed with colon cancer in 2018. “She was in and out of the hospital until she sadly passed away, but received the best care from the nurses and doctors, and I will always be really appreciative of what they did through her tough battle.”
Today, Julia is a member of the Foundation Board of Directors and is dedicated to raising critical funds to build extraordinary—supporting a campaign to build a new patient tower.
“What the staff do despite the age of the facility is incredible. I can only imagine what they are going to be able to do with a whole new building.”
Julia says what many people may not realize is that when the government agrees to fund a project like a new build, the community has to raise a significant portion to make it possible. “The community really needs to come together so that we can actually put in all the equipment and the beds. If we really want to make this happen, and under the timeline, it’s really going to be up to the community to rally and come together to give it everything we got.”
Julia’s ride is a celebration of the care that made a difference for someone she loved—and a commitment to ensuring St. Joe’s can continue to be there for others. Join Julia and the St. Joe’s community at Cycle 4 St. Joe’s and help build extraordinary care for the future.
