Building Extraordinary Together: Rayla Myhal

Rayla Myhal’s connection to St. Joseph’s Health Centre runs deep. She trained here as a nurse, welcomed her daughter here, and has supported the hospital for decades through the Myhal Family Foundation.

Now, as a Foundation board member, Rayla is helping bring the new patient tower to life — a once-in-a-generation investment in care for our community.

During this year’s Cycle for St. Joe’s, Rayla rode alongside her family and community members in support of care close to home. To her, the event represents more than fundraising, it reflects the strength and generosity of the West End community. “It’s fun. It’s beautiful. Our entire community is out,” she said. “These kinds of grassroots events are what allow us to reach our goals and build a new hospital for the West End.”

Rayla has seen firsthand how St. Joe’s has grown alongside the community, and why the new tower is so important for the future. “What we’re creating is absolutely extraordinary,” she shared. “One thing that excites me the most is the vision we have for the hospital.” This new tower will bring larger, brighter spaces for patients and families, more private rooms, expanded mental health services, additional operating rooms, and the latest in care and technology. Rayla believes it will transform care in a lasting way.

“This new tower is going to change the landscape of healthcare in the west end.”

For Rayla, this investment is about more than today — it’s about the generations who will rely on St. Joe’s in the future. “Young people coming into the system will experience a level of care that this generation hasn’t had access to,” she said. “It’s going to set the bar for what community healthcare should be in Toronto and across Ontario. This is our legacy — and it’s theirs moving forward.”

That belief in St. Joe’s future is why the Myhal Family Foundation made a historic $10 million matching gift — the largest match in St. Joe’s history — to inspire others to give generously.

“It’s time to create new spaces that reflect the extraordinary care happening inside its walls,” Rayla has shared publicly. “George and I want to inspire our community to give generously. That’s why the Myhal Family Foundation is matching all donations to support the future of care at St. Joe’s.”

This year, Rayla also joined a group of influential leaders including Olympic champion Summer McIntosh, astronaut Chris Hadfield, and nation builder Peter Gilgan, whose $60 million gift is the largest in St. Joe’s history, lending their voices and momentum to help build the new tower. Being part of that group has been deeply meaningful.

“I never imagined I’d sit beside an astronaut and an Olympian,” she laughed. “To see leaders from across Canada support St. Joe’s means the world. It gives me goosebumps.” And when she looks ahead, Rayla sees something powerful: a community building together.

“We’re here at the beginning,” she said. “Together, we will build extraordinary.”
