Honouring Mary Anne DeMonte-Whelan

With deep gratitude, we recognize Mary Anne DeMonte-Whelan, a devoted volunteer, visionary founder, and passionate champion for mental health at St. Joseph’s Health Centre.

Fifteen years ago, Mary Anne co-founded St. Joe’s Plate, an event that has grown into one of Toronto’s west end’s most respected charity initiatives. What began as a bold idea rooted in compassion and community has evolved into a signature gathering that brings people together in support of an urgent and deeply personal cause — young adult mental health care.

Through her strong leadership, dedication, and unwavering commitment — alongside an exceptional committee — St. Joe’s Plate has raised over $3 million to advance young adult mental health care at St. Joe’s and reduce the stigma surrounding mental health challenges. Mary Anne’s work has helped expand access to care, strengthen programs, and create safe spaces for young people and families navigating complex journeys.

Mary Anne’s vision and determination have left a lasting imprint on the hospital and the broader community. The impact of her leadership will continue to strengthen mental health care for years to come, supporting young people and families across the west end.

Mary Anne’s legacy at St. Joseph’s is extraordinary and she will be deeply missed.⁣
