Audree Koehle’s Wish, Brought to Life at the Lake House Palliative Care Centre

A Legacy of Gratitude and Compassion

More than 60 years ago, Hans Koehle first encountered the care and compassion of St. Joe’s — an experience that stayed with him and shaped his connection to the hospital over a lifetime.

Years later, that connection took on new meaning through his wife, Audree. Before her passing in 2015, Audree received palliative care at St. Joe’s and often spoke about the families around her—about how much it mattered to feel supported, understood, and at peace. She hoped that others walking the same path might one day have more space, more comfort, and more time together.

That hope became the foundation for the Lake House Palliative Care Centre.

Inspired by Audree’s wish, an $11.6 million gift was made to help bring the Lake House Palliative Care Centre to life. Working closely with the St. Joe’s Foundation, care teams, and patient family advisors, the space was designed to feel warm and familiar, more like a lakeside home. Every detail was considered with patients and families in mind.

A place of comfort and compassionate end-of-life care

Now open, the Lake House Palliative Care Centre offers 10 private inpatient rooms within a 15,000-square-foot space overlooking Lake Ontario. Families gather in shared spaces like the Great Room, kitchen, and quiet sitting areas — places designed for conversation, reflection, and rest. An outpatient clinic also supports patients who wish to remain at home for as long as possible, providing specialized palliative.

At the opening of the Lake House Palliative Care Centre, Hans honoured Audree’s legacy alongside caregivers, families, and members of the St. Joe’s community. What began as a personal wish has become a place of comfort for many, ensuring compassionate end-of-life care for patients and families, today and in the years ahead.

WATCH HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE OPENING CEREMONY

When Luigi Galante was transferred to the Lake House Palliative Care Centre shortly after it opened, his family noticed the difference immediately. The space offered calm, comfort, and the chance to be together in a way that hadn’t been possible before.

“The care was special the minute we walked in,” says Luigi’s son, Enrico. “The team had a certain magic in how they spoke to my dad. We were able to come together as a family and spend his final days by his side.”
